Meander down the Avon

From the peaceful tranquility of Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens to punting down the Avon River, you can enjoy Christchurch at your leisure.

The 'Garden City' itself is lined with 19th century stone buildings, contemporary galleries and open-air markets. Experience the Cultural Precinct and banks of the Avon River by vintage tram, classic Edwardian punt or the comfort of a riverside restaurant. By foot, explore the growing network of urban laneways packed with bars, eateries and an eclectic mix of boutique shops.

Old meets new

Cathedral Square is regarded as the very centre of Christchurch, attached to the historic Worcester Boulevard, the metropolis Colombo St, and sits close to the meandering Avon River.

Meet new people during a game of chess, or vsit the beautiful old Cathedral, overlooked by the modern chalice sculpture.

Make the most of the daily market in the Square. You will find everything from Possum Fur garments, to affordable backpacker fashions and greenstone (pounamu). There are bargains for the traveller to be found here, but don't be afraid to check with the vendor that a product is made in New Zealand.

Catch a tram from Cathedral Junction, or the Square itself. These historic trams will take you on a loop circuit of the best central city attractions. Your ticket allows you to hop on-and-off at different stops over two consecutive days. The romantic-at-heart can dine aboard in the evening.

Banks Peninsula is full of picturesque bays

Lyttelton, a historic township 20 minutes from Christchurch, has a strong artisan presence and eclectic cafes. Lyttelton overlooks the South Island's largest port and is surrounded by turn-of-the-century weatherboard cottages and stone buildings nestled in the hillside. Lyttelton's streets cater to the local lifestyle; busy with commercial outlets, boutique shops, restaurants and cafés proudly serving home roasted coffee and fresh produce with eclectic global influences.

Swim with the Dolphins in Akaroa

A picturesque 90 minute drive from Christchurch lies Akaroa, a charming French-inspired village cradled in the arms of an ancient volcano. Take in sweeping harbour views and see the outer bays from a hilltop vantage point. In the village itself, spend a leisurely day exploring boutique shops, an antique museum, galleries and gourmet eateries, or swim with the rare Hector's dolphin.
